Fight Night Sparta Chuldow Martial Arts
Saturday 2nd of September was the night of Fight Night Sparta held at Chuldow Martial Arts in Wakefield. Nine ring fights featuring points fighting, continuous and full-contact kick-jutsu.
The action was non-stop and a lighter side was experienced with the addition of audience participation in padded Sumo suits between fights.
Special mention must be made of the heroic charity fighters. Two novices never before having been in the ring with only a few weeks training going head to head with a goal not of winning but of raising money to help others. Reece Davison raising £211 for MacMillan and Tony Summers raising £350 for the Blue Lamp Foundation (who help Emergency Services personnel injured in the line of duty). This was added to by on-the-night generosity o £336.59 put into the collection buckets making the charity total £897.59! Both of these guys had obviously worked hard to get ready for the night and put on great show with Reece taking the belt but I think everyone will agree that with that much done to help others they are both true Champions.
Now they say a picture is worth a thousand words….
Fight Night at Chuldow Martial Arts is held Bi-annually, if you are a novice and interested in future charity fights held at Chuldow Martial Arts then get in touch .

Wednesday 2nd of August saw the second visit to Chuldow Martial Arts of legend Mr Owen King. Owen King has over 30 years of Martial Arts experience, holds a 4th Dan black belt and was the winner of 12 British titles, 2 European titles and 4 World titles.
The seminar covered a great deal with Owen King sharing his experience and training methods for point and continuous fighting and everyone in attendance was left with plenty to think about when time finally ran out.
A great evening of training with a brilliant instructor. Thank you Owen King

Saturday 4th March 2017 saw the first Chuldow Martial Arts Taekwon-Do Black Belt Graduation. As the first of it’s kind it was conducted by Mr East’s Taekwon-Do Instructor and honoured guest Grandmaster P Liversidge 9th Degree with the assistance of Mr Robert Caschetto 4th Degree. This was also due to Mr East being himself assessed for promotion to 4th Degree Black Belt, a milestone in Taekwon-Do training.
The day started with each candidate being assessed on patterns and basic technique and Mr East on a selection of advanced patterns. A question and answer session followed testing the candidates on their knowledge of Taekwon-Do and Korean History along with theory and terminology. The candidates then padded up for sparring with each demonstrating one on one and two on one sparring and the addition of technical sparring for Mr East. This was followed by traditional one step sparring and self-defence with Mr East also demonstrating defence against an armed attacker (knife).
The breaking followed with Mrs East and Miss Elliott performing breaks using a flying side kick over an obstacle, a kick of their own choosing (Mrs East chose a jumping back kick whilst Miss Elliott demonstrated the reverse turning kick) and both completing a knife hand break to two boards. Mr East’s breaking consisted of a three board break with the back-fist and a four board break using a kick of his own choosing for which a turning kick was chosen.
After the debris had been cleaned up and the floor swept (debris donated to those of our students with wood burning heaters at home) the candidates were left to sweat whilst GM Liversidge assessed the results. After what seemed an age but was probably not that long at all the candidates were called onto the mats and feedback was given. In brief it is safe to say that the Grandmaster was very happy with the standard displayed and in short order Mrs East was promoted to 1st Degree Black Belt, Miss Elliott to 1st Degree Black Belt and Mr East, after a short 28 years of training, to 4th Degree Black Belt with the right to the status of Taekwon-Do Expert.
Needless to say that the day was a mix of nerves and excitement followed by emotion and elation.

Bruce Lee’s Birthday as it happens was also the date of the Chuldow Martial Arts Region 1 Championships which saw students from across the Chuldow Region 1 Academies come together to compete in Karate Kata, Taekwon-Do Tul, Kickboxing Drills, point sparring and continuous sparring (kickboxing). The atmosphere may have been friendly but right from the start it was obvious that everyone was determined to prove their worth.
|
Kata was up first with some amazing youngsters overcoming nerves to display their budding Karate and, for the first time in a Chuldow Competition, Taekwon-Do skills in the Kata/pattern section. With competitors as young as 4 years old it simply must be understood how momentous it is for these children to come onto the mats, on their own, to perform complex movements in front of a room full of parents and peers, a testament to each of the children and to the Chuldow Academies they represent. The older children and later the adults followed with superb displays of skill, focus and concentration as day progressed and the competition hotted up. |
|
|
The spectators were not given a minute to get their breath as another first for Chuldow, Kickboxing Drills, were brought onto the competition mat and with great success. Kickboxers, now able to demonstrate their skills solo, had clearly been working hard to polish their moves to wow the judges and the audience. It was clearly a hit, especially with the younger students. |
|
|
Points Sparring was up next with competitors testing their skill head to head. From the children right up through to the adults the standard was exceptional and with high quality refereeing ensuring the matches ran smoothly the excitement left the audience as out of breath as the competitors. From the budding young white belts to the seasoned black belts the competition was hard fought and hard won. |
|
|
Not a minutes rest though as the continuous sparring followed hot on the heels of the point competition with some brave souls entering their third category of the day. The sweat really did flow on this one with fighters in all the age categories giving everything they had in possibly the most gruelling section of the day. |
|
As the event came to a close presentations were made to the winners with beautiful trophies presented amidst thunderous applause to be taken home for pride of place on shelves, fire places and display cabinets across Yorkshire and once again calm settled in the Chuldow world…until the next one!
The results from the 2016 Region 1 Championships.
