Chuldow Region 1 Championships 27-11-2016
Bruce Lee’s Birthday as it happens was also the date of the Chuldow Martial Arts Region 1 Championships which saw students from across the Chuldow Region 1 Academies come together to compete in Karate Kata, Taekwon-Do Tul, Kickboxing Drills, point sparring and continuous sparring (kickboxing). The atmosphere may have been friendly but right from the start it was obvious that everyone was determined to prove their worth.
Kata was up first with some amazing youngsters overcoming nerves to display their budding Karate and, for the first time in a Chuldow Competition, Taekwon-Do skills in the Kata/pattern section. With competitors as young as 4 years old it simply must be understood how momentous it is for these children to come onto the mats, on their own, to perform complex movements in front of a room full of parents and peers, a testament to each of the children and to the Chuldow Academies they represent. The older children and later the adults followed with superb displays of skill, focus and concentration as day progressed and the competition hotted up.
The spectators were not given a minute to get their breath as another first for Chuldow, Kickboxing Drills, were brought onto the competition mat and with great success. Kickboxers, now able to demonstrate their skills solo, had clearly been working hard to polish their moves to wow the judges and the audience. It was clearly a hit, especially with the younger students.
Points Sparring was up next with competitors testing their skill head to head. From the children right up through to the adults the standard was exceptional and with high quality refereeing ensuring the matches ran smoothly the excitement left the audience as out of breath as the competitors. From the budding young white belts to the seasoned black belts the competition was hard fought and hard won.
Not a minutes rest though as the continuous sparring followed hot on the heels of the point competition with some brave souls entering their third category of the day. The sweat really did flow on this one with fighters in all the age categories giving everything they had in possibly the most gruelling section of the day. |
As the event came to a close presentations were made to the winners with beautiful trophies presented amidst thunderous applause to be taken home for pride of place on shelves, fire places and display cabinets across Yorkshire and once again calm settled in the Chuldow world…until the next one!
